Australia, 1900: The young ladies from Appleyard College travel to Hanging Rock, a strange geological rock formation, for a Valentine's Day picnic. After lunch, several of the girls and a teacher hike up into the rocks. Three of them are never seen again. As days and weeks go by, the impact of this event creates unforeseen consequences for the school and all those associated with it. While the disappearance of the girls is baffling in itself, it is the chilling long-term effects that become the real mystery. Inspiring a hit movie in the 1970s, this novel is a most interesting read for fans of Rebecca, The Virgin Suicides, and We Have Always Lived in the Castle.
