Violinist and BBC Radio host Clemency Burton-Hill has lost count of how often she's been asked to create a classical music playlist for someone. It's a tough task because, in an age when a seemingly infinite musical library is available online, "that question of 'where to start' is critical."
Thankfully, Burton-Hill offers an expert cue for "where to start"
with Year of Wonder
, a curated collection of 366 listening suggestions spanning 1,000 years and more than 200 composers. From Johann Sebastian Bach's "Mass in B minor (BWV 232)" on January 1—"on this first day of a new adventure, let us begin with a great big drumbeat and a choir singing their hearts out"
—to Johann Strauss II's "Champagne Polka" on December 31, each day's entry includes a musical recommendation along with a brief write-up about the piece. Many of the included works may already be in your own record or CD collection; others can be found online. However you choose to listen—and in whatever order—it's sure to be a melodious year! (KG)
