Crime novelist Lawrence Block's In Sunlight or in Shadow is an amazing collection of short stories. The pieces - written by the likes of Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, and even Block himself - are inspired by the paintings of American artist Edward Hopper. Each painting (included at the beginning of its respective story) holds a wealth of potential, and each writer approaches the prompt in a different way. Some take a literal interpretation, with their stories portraying the scenes captured in their chosen images; others use the paintings as a springboard to weave something completely new. Every story is compelling and surprising - and some can get a bit strange or a tad risqué - but all of them are insightful glimpses into the writers, their craft, and their process.
