Fleeing her abusive fiancé, Irene Woodward enlists in the Red Cross as a "Doughnut Dolly," supplying food and morale to soldiers battling the Nazis. Accompanied by her instant best friend Dorothy Dunford, Irene treks across Europe, listening to the young men's confessions and gracefully batting away their flirtations. What begins as an idyllic romp through scenic France gradually turns somber, as Irene and Dorothy witness the horrors of Buchenwald and experience unthinkable losses. The ending manages the rare trick of being at once poignant, believable, and tinged with hope.
