Matilda Simpkin is a firebrand who made her name fighting for women's suffrage in England. But by 1928, the suffrage battle won, the indomitable Mattie is restless for a new cause. She finds it when one of her former suffragette sisters begins a fascist youth-training program. Appalled, Mattie launches the Amazons, a self-improvement club for working-class girls. Not all goes according to plan, however, and Mattie's single-mindedness threatens to derail the club…and her own cherished friendships. By turns humorous and poignant, this novel thoughtfully considers one woman's struggle to remain significant in a world that equates age with insignificance.
