Detective Jim Clemo's first case back from mandatory leave looks like an open-and-shut accident: teenager Noah Sadler is found floating unconscious in the Feeder Canal in Bristol, England, after horsing around with his best friend, Abdi Mahad. The problem is, Abdi won't say what exactly happened, and a witness claims to have seen a struggle before the fall. And then the press gets wind of the case—exploiting both Noah's terminal disease and Abdi's status as a Somali refugee in a socially volatile climate. As Clemo uncovers more layers to this increasingly convoluted case, the families of the two boys must confront long-suppressed secrets to understand what happened that fateful night.
