This big-hearted, sharply observed novel opens with the meeting of junior doctor Yasmin's conservative Indian parents and her fiancé Joe's white liberal mother in London. What starts as a clever social comedy becomes a deeper, more complex story of likable but flawed characters dealing with culture clashes, prejudice, familial expectations, addiction, infidelity, and desire—all of which threaten to upend both Yasmin's relationship, and the one between her parents, which she'd always believed was a "love marriage." You'll be surprised by the twists and turns in this utterly gripping story, but you won't be disappointed. (AG)
