An exceptionally researched historical novel, The Exiles is set in 1840 and chronicles the struggles two girls face in life. There's Mathinna, an Aboriginal girl in Australia, who is taken by Christian missionaries. And then Evangeline, a young woman in London whose life is changed in a moment of love, after which she is wrongly accused of theft and sent to prison, then transported to Australia. I learned so much about life back then and it touched me so much that I am still mourning the fact that I've finished the book! A wonderful read.
