After her cousin Catalina writes an alarming letter home, Mexico City socialite Noemí Taboada sets out for the countryside to investigate. The crumbling, once-grand estate where Catalina lives with her in-laws is ruled by an ancient patriarch, his brooding son, and their stern housekeeper, all of whom dismiss Noemí's concern over Catalina's sudden ill health and paranoia. When Noemí begins hearing strange noises and having vivid nightmares, she's determined to unearth the family's dark secrets. This deliciously creepy—at times unsettling—tale manages to both embody and subvert the tropes of Gothic literature. (KG)
