Before he was Officer Clemmons, the friendly policeman on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, François Clemmons was a young man growing up in 1940s and 1950s Alabama and Ohio. A gay Black man from a religious but broken home, Clemmons struggled throughout his life with his identity and societal expectations in the face of racism and homophobia. Clemmons nonetheless seized every opportunity afforded to him. Gifted with a wonderful singing voice, he attended Oberlin College on a scholarship, where he embraced his homosexuality, and eventually pursued a career in music. A chance meeting with Fred Rogers propelled him onto the national stage, but even those wonderful years were not without their struggles and heartache. Told with brutal honesty but full of heart and hope, Officer Clemmons is an eye-opening story of one man's lifetime of experiences. (SM)
