Bas Bleu - Champion of the odd little book...and wellspring of inspired gifts for readers

The Etymologicon: A Circular Stroll Through the Hidden Connections of the English Language

Mark Forsyth Paperback, 279 pages; 2012 (2011)
#UH0542     $16.00
Members' Price: $13.60

How chickens led to calling billiards "pool," what "testicles" have to do with "testifying," why Hitler would've been offended if you called him a "Nazi," an eighteenth-century recipe for the original kind of "humble pie," how the villainous "bogey man" of Victorian myth and song lent his name to a golf score, why both the centers of your eyes and young students are called "pupils" - and a whirlwind of other fascinating etymological stories fill this waggishly entertaining book. A perfect gift for good-humored word-lovers, The Etymologicon kept me constantly absorbed, surprised, and amused. (CH)

Comments about Bas Bleu The Etymologicon: A Circular Stroll Through the Hidden Connections of the English Language:

Originally was bought with my daughter in mind, but, when I was wrapping gifts I took a good look at it and thought my son might like this also. I gave it to my son and when he opened it he was very interested in the back cover, wanting to know where I found something like this.He is home from college and he has already almost finished it and said how fun and enjoyable the book is and that his friend wants to borrow it next.FYI- my son is a child/psych major and his friend is a chemical engineer major, quite a difference between them and my daughter, a communications major who the book was originally intended for. And they all like it! Good call.

Comments about Bas Bleu The Etymologicon: A Circular Stroll Through the Hidden Connections of the English Language:

Over lunch, a friend said, "I need a book about where sayings come from. . ." and there, in the faithfully delivered Bas Bleu catalogue, her wish appeared. I ordered it ASAP (and something else for myself). I can't describe the sound of her surprise and pleasure of a wish fulfilled -- better than she imagined. The content and writing satisfied her curiosity.

I enjoyed it so much that I ordered two more to give as gifts to a niece and a former student.
