At the depth of the Depression, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) offered employment to thousands of unemployed writers. Their mission was to create guidebooks for each state of the union. The Minnesota Historical Society Press reissued three, one for its own state, as well as those of neighbors South Dakota and Wisconsin. The guides make great gifts for Midwesterners—I had fun reading about my hometown, and I even found an error on its map. Plus, they make amusing—although out-of-date and hence sometimes confusing—resources for planning quirky road trips.
