In a specific and concrete sense the idea was to attempt to make visual the crowded glamour of a New York restaurant during the noon hour. I am hoping that ideas less easy to define have, perhaps, crept in also.
Edward Hopper's own words, above, get to the quick of what's so fascinating about his work: the sense that the artist was expressing more, perhaps, than even he understood. In presenting Hopper's New York paintings, Avis Berman helps us see the city through the artist's eyes, as it was—and in some cases as it wasn't—in the early decades of the twentieth century. Included are many quotations from Hopper himself, as well as analysis from other art historians. Over forty paintings are reproduced in full color, with additional studies and sketches in black and white.
