In the Presence of Books
Deborah DeWit Marchant Introduction and text by Kim Stafford

Oregon artist Deborah DeWit Marchant is herself an avid reader, and she often includes books and readers in her images. (Many of her pastels and oil paintings have been featured on Bas Bleu covers over the years.) In the Presence of Books presents over fifty of her works that relate to "the book—as an object and an idea." Each image is beautifully reproduced on its own 8½"x11" page. The text is kept to a minimum: it's the images that do the talking. There's an ethereal quality to these drawings and paintings that appeals especially to people who, like the artist, live a life filled with books.
