Beryl Markham was born in England in 1902 but was taken to East Africa at the age of four by her father. West with the Night is her beautifully written memoir about her extraordinary childhood. She grew up in a tough terrain, riding horses, carrying spears, and experiencing close encounters with lions. She learned to fly a plane, and for several years she operated a mail and passenger service in Kenya. (In 1936, she became the first person to fly solo westward across the Atlantic Ocean - from England to Nova Scotia, where she crash-landed...and survived.) Markham has been romanticized by some writers and dismissed by others, but her memoir of her most unusual childhood is mesmerizing to read. Said she about this book, "I just wanted to bring back a good life in a good country so I could look at them both again." Her success in doing just that is a boon for us all. (EE)
