Though it was the first mystery that L. R. Wright had ever written, The Suspect beat out books by heavy hitters such as Ruth Rendell and Jonathan Kellerman to win the Edgar award for Best Mystery of the Year in 1985. This beautifully written and enormously atmospheric novel, set in a small town on Canada's "Sunshine Coast," is much less a whodunit - we know the "who" from the first page - so much as a why-dunit. The answer, which is slowly and gracefully revealed, turns out to be chillier than Ottawa in January. Its air of delicate, introspective melancholy has made The Suspect a huge favorite with mystery aficionados. (MT)
