"In Two Shakes of a Lamb's Tail" Knowledge Cards
#UB7072
$9.95
These cards of idioms and curious sayings feature a definition (such as "Make someone feel unwelcome") and a hint ("Icy joint") on one side, and the answer on the other (in this case, "Give someone the cold shoulder"). But the most entertaining elements are the explanations of the sayings' origins: I had no idea, for example, that the "cold shoulder" referred not to a romantic rebuff, but to the temperature of the mutton served to an unfavored guest in nineteenth-century England. The boxed deck includes 48 such tidbits on 4"x3¼" cards. Cheer up a friend who may be "under the weather" with a quiz-off; go "the whole nine yards" and make it a competition; or simply enjoy flipping through the deck yourself "until the cows come home."
