Readers who've enjoyed the magical realism of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Like Water for Chocolate will be mesmerized by this debut novel from James Cañón. The Colombian mountain village of Mariquita becomes a town of women when a band of guerrillas march in and force all the men to either join their ranks or die, leaving only the women, children, and the parish priest behind. At first, all is despair. Several schemes to revitalize the village fail. Finally, one of the women takes charge and declares herself magistrate. The entire town is reorganized as a commune of sorts, with the women all living in harmony—and, once they've banished the priest, walking around naked. Mariquita not only survives, it flourishes—that is, until some of the men come back! Tales from the Town of Widows is really quite funny, in a weird and wonderful sort of way.
