Two women—strangers seeming to have nothing in common—are summoned to a lawyer's office. It turns out they shared a mutual best friend, Roberta, who somehow kept these two women very separate during her lifetime. Now that she's gone—recently deceased after a long illness—she's managed to bring them together via a provision of her will. They're to jointly open her safety-deposit box. But the twist is that no instructions are left as to the disposition of its contents. The women are faced with a mystery: why did their late friend entrust them, jointly, with this mission—and what is the mission? The two women approach their common responsibility in very different ways, learning much about each other, as well as quite a few surprises about the late—and rather mischievous and unconventional—Roberta. Patricia Volk has constructed an enjoyable novel on a clever premise.
