The Ivy Tree
Mary Stewart
#UB6952 Paperback, 223 pages; 2007 (1961) $12.95
Bas Bleu Society Members' Price: $11.01

The Ivy Tree, reminiscent of the suspenseful work of Daphne Du Maurier, catapulted me at once into England's Northumberland country. The novel begins eight years after then-twenty-year-old Annabel fled her family home at the centuries-old Whitescar farm, leaving behind untold stories and broken hearts. Mary Grey, an expatriate Canadian with an uncanny resemblance to the absent young woman, stumbles upon Annabel's cousin Connor, who convinces her to impersonate his cousin for their mutual financial benefit. This compelling mystery of family intrigue and hidden identity captivates the reader with its memorable characters and vivid descriptions of the English countryside. The climax, a stunning revelation, is among the most skillful I've ever read, and leads to an utterly satisfying conclusion. A thumping good read!
