It's 1944, and an old man sitting in his English-countryside home is suddenly charmed by the anomalous sight of a quiet, knobby-kneed little boy walking dreamily along a railroad track, with an African gray parrot on his shoulder. The old man soon discovers that the boy—a Jewish German immigrant, living with one of the old man's neighbors—is mute, and that his pet parrot utters, among other things, a suspicious sequence of German numbers. Before long, there is a murder in the neighborhood, and the parrot is abducted. The old man—who may, in fact, be Sherlock Holmes!—is on the case. A profound sadness courses through The Final Solution, but this slim mystery novella is also nimble and elegant, and a lovely paean to the classic detective writing of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
