The old man soon discovers that the boy—a Jewish German immigrant, living with one of the old man's neighbors—is mute, and that his pet parrot utters, among other things, a suspicious sequence of German numbers. Before long, there is a murder in the neighborhood, and the parrot is abducted. The old man—who may, in fact, be Sherlock Holmes!—is on the case. A profound sadness courses through The Final Solution, but this slim mystery novella is also nimble and elegant, and a lovely paean to the classic detective writing of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
