The unnamed narrator of this intriguing whodunit is an Argentinean graduate student, newly arrived in Oxford, England, to study mathematics. He is looking forward to a year of intensive research at the legendary university, yet within days of his arrival, his invalid landlady is murdered. The only clue the police have is a cryptic note sent to renowned Oxford mathematician Arthur Seldom. The note bears a drawing of a circle and the words “the first of the series.” Seldom, whose recently published book draws parallels between mathematical logic and serial killers, fears the culprit is concocting an elaborate homage to him. As the clues—and the bodies—begin to pile up, Seldom and the narrator probe centuries of mathematical theory to uncover the murderer’s endgame. You don’t need to be a math whiz to appreciate this intellectual murder-mystery, but be prepared for some mind-bending theories. I gasped out loud at the final twist!
