Martin Railsback, the protagonist of Something Missing, has to be one of the most interesting burglars in the literary caper genre. His obsessive-compulsive personality provides him with the mental discipline to carry out bizarre, but totally undetected, thefts in a variety of unsuspecting Connecticut homeowners’ domiciles over a period of several years. When he (quite by accident) is made aware of a marital problem in the home of one of his “clients,” he decides to help, anonymously, thus embarking on a tortuous series of lies, half-truths, and narrow escapes that will eventually lead him into new territory. This is a charmingly quirky book, full of suspenseful moments and hilarious details.
