I read Beyond Suspicion in one sitting, each chapter a little faster than the last, trying to alleviate a feeling of tension that only intensified. Using heady, stream-of-consciousness prose, French suspense writer Tanguy Viel revives the good-old American form of noir fiction in this story of a blackmail scheme that leads into unexpectedly deep waters. The plot is spare, and Viel’s language is lyrical but gritty. The combination is more than a little intoxicating. This is not exactly a cozy mystery, but that is not to say you won’t enjoy curling up with it.
