Often compared to Tolkien's novels, the Chronicles of Prydain series from the 1960s was a favorite of several of my male friends growing up. The first book of the five introduces the reader to Taran, a young assistant pigkeeper with heroic aspirations. When Hen Wen—a sow famous for her oracular gifts—escapes, Taran follows his charge into the woods and inadvertently embarks on a dangerous mission. He and the motley crew of companions he assembles along the way—including a delightfully clever and sharp-tongued young heroine, Eilonwy—must work together to save the kingdom of Prydain from the forces of evil. The successive volumes follow Taran's quest to prove himself a heroic warrior, to win the hand of Eilonwy, and to rid Prydain of evil forever. Blending classic fantasy elements rooted in Welsh mythology with humorous characterizations of very human foibles, Lloyd Alexander creates an enchanting, yet accessible, world. For ages 9-12.
