"Oh, Martin, there's more to life than garbage."
So says Francesca, a roach, to her best friend, Martin, a skunk—they had met in a trash can years before. Francesca wants to attend the blessing of the animals at the Cathedral, but Martin agrees with the roach elders: the trip would be too dangerous. Besides, he says, the celebration is meant for the "cute and cuddlies," not for outcasts like roaches and skunks. But Francesca, named for St. Francis, in whose honor the rite was conceived, is determined to attend. So they're off on their adventure of inclusion. The story is timeless, and the illustrations are terrific—dramatic, fresh, clever, and moving. Ages 6-12.
