I fell in love with Pat Conroy's The Water Is Wide, the story of his year teaching on Daufuskie Island. What I found there - wonderful stories, quirky characters, good humor, and deep meaning - is all present in this memoir. We learn of his difficult childhood, as well as the great characters of his life: his mother, a life-changing English teacher, a bookshop owner, and several writer-heroes. Through memorable anecdotes that transport the reader from Beaufort, South Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia, to the capitals of Europe, we discover what Conroy reads, why he writes, and how he lives. He tells us his mother raised him "to tell the stories that will make all our lives clear" - and he did, right up until his death in 2016.
